All the family of David Crudge would like to say thank you to his many
friends for all their kind words and support following his sudden death.
Of course we loved him dearly but it is good to know, from the many kind
words we received, that he was held in such high regard by so many people

The Events Committee are very pleased to say that this year’s event broke all       previous records in terms of cars entered, numbers of the public attending and most importantly, the amount of money taken for the good causes supported. We made a profit of approx. £16,500 and this has already been distributed to:

Playgroup

The Church

The Village Hall

The W.I.

The ATC

We would also like to thank all those who helped, before, during and after the event. Many people put a huge effort into making sure that it was a success. We have never had so much assistance before both from inside and outside the village. So thank you all - it is something that we in Churchill can be justly proud of.

W.I.   Mrs Wendy Bridgman, our president, opened the meeting on Tuesday l0th June by thanking all those members and villagers from Churchill and Kingham who helped with the making, preparation and serving of food throughout the day on     Sunday 8th June at the Churchill Classic Car Day. The event was a huge success with at least 400 Classic Cars registered (a full house she believed!) and many      visitors came to view the entrants. It was a very busy day for the W.I. and she had learnt a lot about the need for more people at peak times. She also called upon the Churchill members to reciprocate by making cakes for the W.I. stall at Kingham Fete on Sunday 13th July.

After dealing with a few administrative details regarding W.I. visits during the        summer, Mrs Bridgman introduced the presenter for the evening, Carole Richardson, who had re-titled her talk to "Tuva! Where's that?"

She went on to give a most informative and interesting slide presentation on her     recent tourist expedition to Tuva: an extremely beautiful, mountainous republic in the far south of Siberia. It took 9.5 hrs flying time in three aeroplanes to get to Kyzt the capital of Tuva, which actually claims to be the "centre of Asia". The country is about the size of England and Wales put together but with a population of only 320,000.

After a most entertaining description of her various adventures in Tuva, Carole        allowed us to see some of the treasures she had brought back with her including some silver birch bark slippers and beautifully decorated wooden boxes.

Loma Wainwright thanked Carole for her delightful presentation and felt that we had all learned a lot.

The next meeting will be in Churchill Village Hall on Tuesday 8th July at 7.30pm. when Mrs Barbara Gray will be speaking about Denman College. All are welcome.

Teas on the Green - August Bank Holiday Monday - 25 August.  From 2.00pm to

5.00pm there will be afternoon teas with home made cakes and refreshments served on the green (weather permitting) and in the Village Hall.  In addition there will be a bric-a-brac stall for those interested in picking up a bargain, a produce stall for those who prefer someone else to do the cultivation, and a tombola to tempt the gamblers amongst you.  I should like to thank in advance the ladies in the village for providing the magnificent array of delicious cakes, the donations to the bric-a-brac and the    tombola.  If any of you have some time on your hands on the day then your voluntary support is always appreciated. Once again the teas on the May Bank Holiday was another successful fund raising event for the Village Hall and the weather was kind thus maintaining the bank holiday traditions. Thank you for your generous support in making it so successful. The Hall can only continue to function with your support.

(As Roundabout was going to press we heard about the sad loss of Rosemary Moore from our    village community  -  The Editor)

Rosemary Moore died peacefully at home on Saturday 21st June.

Brigadier Peter Moore and Rosemary came to live in Churchill in 1990. Sadly, following a long illness Peter died in 1992. Rosemary a much loved member of the Hook Norton Literature Group extended her role in village life: a member of the PCC;  for several years she was       responsible for the floral decorations in All Saints Church, a loyal church cleaner - a veritable holy duster; shades of the Village Quiz which her team won this year: a member of the Art    Appreciation Classes; Chairman of the Churchill & Sarsden War Memorial Flower Fund, a role she valued; leading member of the Churchill Players, her sense of fun was contagious, on one occasion she electrified the audience by appearing in black fish net tights! Her talents came together at Annabel & Jeffrey Morgan's themed dinner parties. At the Trafalgar Day Anniversary dinner, appropriate dress requested, expecting she would sweep in as Lady Hamilton, she came as a Plymouth ‘doxy’.  She enjoyed and supported all village events and every year      joyously sang Carols round the Christmas Tree on the village green. A production by church members of The Passion, based on the York mystery plays, saw her as Mary, Mother of Jesus, a role which enabled her to reflect the strength of her faith.

She loved her garden and opened it at the biannual Village Gardens event in aid of the church.

She served in the WRNS in the second world war and after trained at St Thomas' as a      Nightingale nurse, of which she was justly proud, before marriage to Peter. They had five    children, two sons, three daughters and twelve grandchildren.  Until her last illness she was a familiar figure walking her Border terrier, Finit.

She will be greatly missed by her many friends.   Our sincere condolences to all the family

DAVID CRUDGE:  A packed congregation at St.. Andrew’s Kingham paid their last       respects to the memory of David who died on April 30'h. Born in Churchill in 1920 he was the village's longest resident.

Tragedy hit the family when his father died in 1924, and although a brilliant pupil his grammar school education was curtailed when he was only 16 - he was needed at home to help run the family farm. At an early age he showed musical talent becoming organist at the Methodist Chapel for some 50 years. He was always in demand to play the organ at church events over a wide area. A chorister too, he sang with the Kingham Choral Society since 1951 and was their Festival chairman for 16 years.

Other than his musical interests he was honorary clerk to Churchill Parish Council for 28 years and always supported village events, contributing occasional interesting items to "ROUNDABOUT". He was for 20 years a governor of the Nch. Penhurst Home in     Chipping Norton and one of the founders of the C. Norton School Parent/Teacher      Association, a manager too of Churchill Village school for 8 years.

Principally a farmer, he was always interested in all farming and rural activities, in       particular a project begun many years earlier by his father in establishing the pedigree herd of Dairy Shorthorn cattle which he was proud to exhibit at local and regional      agricultural shows.  He was in 1946 the first secretary of the newly formed Chipping Norton & District Farming Club.

David was a man of great Faith and Sound Vision, with a lovely sense of humour and many loyal friends - truly he was an English Gentleman

He will be greatly missed

Chipping Norton and District War Memorial Hospital:

Since plans for Chipping Norton and District’s new Community Hospital were          approved by WODC, campaigners have been anxiously awaiting details of the next steps and an indication of when the new hospital will be open.

A review meeting with the PCT is planned for May 23rd when all the key elements will be discussed.

Recently, Clive Hill of the Hospital Action Group said “ I understand the PCT’s latest plans indicate that work to finalise contractor costings is underway and that a fixed price should be settled by July 2008. Once these costs have been approved by OCC and the PCT construction work should start, on site, around the end of September.     A full programme for the works is not yet finalised but discussions to date suggest an 18 month building period, for the whole scheme, with a hand over about March 2010”.

Clive added “ we are extremely pleased the building work will start soon and that our much needed new Community Hospital will become a reality. Apart from working with the PCT to ensure the hospital facilities are the best we can achieve the Action Group will also focus on ensuring that the healthcare services provided are at least as good in quality and range as we have historically enjoyed. In fact with all the advantages the new hospital will offer, the healthcare provision should be better.”           Clive Hiill

Churchill & Sarsden village playground has just received a major makeover by the Oxfordshire company, Safe and Sound after prolific fundraising events by a group of local women. Installation of the new children's play areas has been completed resulting in one of the most impressive playgrounds in the area suitable for both younger and older children.

Despite being hampered by gale force winds, wintry rain showers and heavy snow storms during the past few weeks, Safe and Sound soldiered on and completed the  installation on 12th April. The new infants' area has been enlarged and re-fenced and includes an impressive centre piece comprising a large wooden climbing frame, complete with slide, tunnel, climbing net, sheltered seating area and rickety bridge. There are two cradle swings, a junior swing and a roundabout.    The original rocking elephant and four-seated seesaw have been re-installed around the new equipment and space has been allocated for a new playhouse and play panels following a recent successful fundraising jumble sale in Churchill Village Hall on 5th April.

The separate junior area has also had a complete overhaul and now boasts two new swings, an extra-wide slide for double the fun, a rolling barrel and an exciting 3-m high climbing net. All the equipment has been chosen to remain in-keeping with the beautiful rural environment.

Visitors from surrounding towns and villages are welcome to come and enjoy the new equipment.

The CASPER committee of nine local mothers was set up in May 2006 with the aim  of raising funds to replace playground equipment.   Over £40,000 was raised from grants and   fund-raising efforts.  Events have been well supported by the local and wider    community.   The project was grant aided by W.O.D.C. and funding was received from Churchill and Sarsden Parish Council and a number of other sources.

For further information about grant aid for local projects from W.O.D.C., please           telephone Tara Nielsen on 01993 861558.   For further information about this project please contact Joanne Hawley on 01608 659272. Joanne Hawley

W.I.  At the Resolutions Meeting held in Churchill Village Hall on Tuesday 13th May, the members agreed, after a lively discussion, to forward both resolutions to the group representative from Bledington, for further discussion.   The Resolutions discussed were:

A) to ban bottom trawling for fish and

B) the inappropriate imprisonment of mentally handicapped women prisoners.

Whilst members agreed that it was imperative to protect deep sea organisms and make fishing sustainable, the injustice suffered by mentally handicapped prisoners was     unacceptable and this provoked a very strong reaction from members.

After the serious part of the evening, Mrs Annabel Morgan gave a delightful talk about her collection of quilts and the memories held by each one.   She also demonstrated the different patterns involved in quilting and amused the members with stories about the sociability of the quilting groups she had belonged to in various parts of the world.   The next meeting is on Tuesday, 10th June with the speaker, Carole Richardson      talking on “Pearls of Tuva  -  a Siberian adventure”.
